ADRIAN BOULT A Portrait-Conducts Vaughan Williams-Holst 4CD 2008
2008 four CD set. Sir Adrian Boult was one of the four great British 20th century conductors to achieve international standing alongside Thomas Beecham, John Barbirolli and Malcolm Sargent. Boult always put the work first, wanting to do justice to the composer's intention: ''I would rather risk a faithful rendering than garnish a performance with so many flourishes and trimmings that the essential message of the work is in danger of being overheard.'' (Sir Adrian Boult) This four disc set portrays the star conductor on recordings made in 1935 and between 1945 and 1956.
